Starting January 1, 2021, the California Family Rights Act (CFRA) was expanded to cover private and public employers with five or more employees.

Since the previous law covered only employers with 50 or more employees, the updated law extends job-protected family leave for certain qualifying reasons to nearly 6 million Californians. This means nearly 400,000 previously unaffected businesses must now comply with the CFRA, according to the Employment Development Department.
