Most employers are preparing for new laws going into effect January 1, 2023 — but San Francisco businesses already should be complying with a new ordinance that went into effect on October 1. Called the Public Health Emergency Leave Ordinance (PHELO), this San Francisco-specific law provides up to 80 hours of leave to employees during public health emergencies, which is available in addition to any paid leave the employer otherwise provides.
