Since the COVID-19 pandemic's onset in early 2020, the labor market has flipped on its axis. Pre-pandemic, the U.S. unemployment rate was 3.8 percent. Then, during the pandemic's downturn, roughly 9.6 million U.S. workers lost their jobs, increasing the unemployment rate to 8.6 percent in 2020, according to the Pew Research Center.
