Opioids, Marijuana and Maintaining an Alcohol- and Drug-Free Workplace

While workplaces continue grappling with the ongoing pandemic and adjusting to current realities, agencies also are tackling non-COVID-19 issues — such as managing opioid addiction in the workplace.

More specifically, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has released technical guidance on the topic — guidance that was spurred by the increase of opioid use and abuse nationally and the unique challenges these issues present in the workplace. Also of concern for employers is how to handle marijuana use, which is somewhat subjective — and given the largely remote workforce due to the current pandemic, drug and alcohol testing is now tricky.
