Child Support Laws and Employee Records

HRCalifornia

The California Department of Child Support Services and your local child support agency are responsible for collecting child support payments.

You must comply with valid child and/or spousal support orders, and provide certain information about employees to these agencies. Information about garnishments against an employee's wages should be treated as confidential and kept private.

If you need assistance complying with a child or spousal support order, or for additional information on compliance and your responsibility and liability, download the “California Child Support: A Guide for Business” from the Department of Child Support Services.
