You can require an employee to visit an appropriate health care professional of your choice if the employee provides insufficient documentation from his/her treating physician or other health care professional, to substantiate that he/she has a disability and needs a reasonable accommodation.1 The examination must be limited to determining the existence of a disability and the functional limitations that require reasonable accommodation. You must pay all costs associated with the visit(s).

Employers must pay all costs associated with their health care provider’s examination, and shall allow employees time off to attend the appointment. The employee may use sick time during the time off.
