Effective January 1, 2017, the City and County of San Francisco (San Francisco) enacted a Paid Parental Leave Ordinance (PPLO) that requires employers in San Francisco to pay a partial weekly salary (Supplemental Compensation) for up to eight weeks to employees who receive California Paid Family Leave (PFL) wage-replacement benefits from California’s Employment Development Department (EDD) during authorized leave for purposes of bonding with a new child (bonding leave). PPLO does not apply when employees receive PFL for reasons other than child bonding leave, e.g., to care for a seriously ill family member.1
