California Workplace Violence Prevention Standards

For some time now, health care employers in California have been required to address workplace violence; and as of July 1, 2024, California’s general industry workplace violence prevention standard requires almost all California employers to develop a workplace violence prevention plan, train employees and maintain a log of violent incidents.

Health facilities must develop and evaluate security plans. The California Department of Public Health licenses and regulates hospitals. Hospitals must conduct a security and safety assessment. Using the assessment, a hospital must develop a security plan with measures to protect personnel, patients and visitors from aggressive or violent behavior. The plan must include specified security considerations.
