Select the Sexual Harassment Investigator

Determining who should conduct the investigation is a critical part of the planning process. Consider the following issues:

  • Is the investigator qualified? If an outside investigator is used, is the person a licensed attorney or a licensed private investigator as required under state law (see Harassment Investigation Overview)?
  • Is the complainant comfortable with the investigator? Are they more comfortable with a male or female investigator?
  • Is the investigator the right person to handle the investigation?
  • Does the investigator possess the experience and expertise to conduct this particular type of investigation?
  • Can the investigator display objectivity?
  • Does the investigator have any bias that will affect the outcome of the investigation?
