Workplace violence is on the rise, according to nonprofit safety advocate the National Safety Council, which also reports that nearly half of U.S. employers say they’re unprepared to prevent and respond to incidents on the job.
When workplace violence occurs, we often hear expressions of sadness, shock and surprise surrounding the incident. While we are right to have compassion for those touched by such violence, it might be a stretch for those close to the tragedy to describe themselves as shocked. As the recent incident in Northern California’s Half Moon Bay illustrates, workplace violence carries with it certain common characteristics.
